The tensions over Iran’s nuclear program are playing out in the world of espionage and covert operations, straight out of the film Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy. Iran blames Israel for killing five of its nuclear scientists and has promised revenge. Now Israel is blaming Iran for attacking its embassy personnel in Georgia and India.
Today, the New York Times reported that a cache of bombs were found in a Bangkok neighborhood. Two Iranians are being held by police and Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak said, “The attempted terrorist attack in Bangkok proves once again that Iran and its proxies continue to perpetrate terrorism.”
This tension has been building for a long time. A year ago, in a Commonwealth Club event, Abbas Milani, director of the Iranian Studies Program at Stanford University, talked about a sophisticated software virus, reportedly developed by Israel and the United States, that severely damaged Iran’s nuclear program.
